Battle report #1 and some conversion work

So I’ve had my second game with a friend of mine at the local GW for the Shadow war Armageddon campaign. Needless to say I had lots of fun, and I think we both had a great time.  Feel free to let me know if there is anything I could do differently for the next battle report, whether it’s more and/or better pictures, more words, whatever it is, let me know.

Set-up:
The set up was very terrain heavy, as it was a game of Shadow war, as games of Shadow War require lots of terrain in order for troops to move around, get behind cover and create lanes of fire. Scenario four was used.

Deployment:

My deployment was along the far table edge, as that was what I had rolled for deployment for the scenario. I moved to deploy everyone as close to 8 inches as possible so as to sort of rush my opponent and keep him on his toes. This, however, did not go entirely as planned, as I will explain later. I had deployed my cultists as far as I could within my deployment zone, as close to where he had his objective in the far corner so I could run my forces up swiftly.

Turn one:
My one new recruit that had been chosen for this battle, and one of my troopers had begun by running 8 inches up the side of the board edge, vying for a good position for both cover, and to get close to the objective, in which I thought they might have been able to blow up. My two heavy stubbers didn’t move, and sat near the back of the board edge, waiting for a good opportunity to unload some shells into the enemy chaos marine forces. My newfound grenade launcher was also waiting to get in on the action, moving forward 4 inches. My leader had also moved up 4 inches, and nestled himself beside my grenade launcher, making sure he was within 12 inches to hand out his leadership to those who might need it. Then, in my eagerness, decided heck with stealth and shot my grenade launcher at the nearest marine, missing, rolling a 3 and a 5 on the roll for whether or not we were spotted, and definitely got spotted. I then continued to unload my heavy stubbers and autoguns into the marines, doing no damage, and pinning one.

In my opponents turn, he had shot one of his plasma gunners at my grenade launcher, left out foolishly in the open, and downed him. His leader was not close enough to shoot anything with his plasma pistol, and so simply sat by the objective, protecting it. His reinforcement of one marine came in, and ran towards his comrades in arms.

Turn two:
On turn two, most of my cultists stayed put but my trooper and new recruit that were moving up the side were getting into better positions with which to fire upon their foes, and keep from getting directly fired upon. The heavy stubbers and autoguns all rang out and the heavy stubbers actually did some damage, where they had hit both marines, causing them both to fall from the top of the building, alas, there was no damage that had befallen them this turn, mostly in part to the ones I was rolling to wound. I managed to wound one from a falling injury, however, and so one space marine was down. The other space marine was pinned and could not fire, and the Chaos space marine leader had been pinned by autogun fire, which prevented him from shooting. The only move made that turn was my opponent who had run up his bolter marine in the hopes of getting to the battle in time.

Turn three:
No one on my side had moved, in the hopes that the cover they had would be enough to keep them from harm. I again shot with everything at the marine that was left on the ground in the hopes of dealing it a wound but to no avail, and one of my heavy stubbers had run out of ammo, leaving him with just a heavy club of a heavy stubber as a weapon. Although in my recovery phase my grenade launcher cultist had gotten back up.

The chaos leader had finally gotten a chance to shoot, along with the other marine. The other marine had shot, downing a trooper then and there. The chaos leader had shot and missed wildly, shooting up in the air in the anticipation of the combat to come.

Turn four:
My leader now had a choice to make, stay put and stay safe, or move forward, charge the plasma gun marine still standing and hope that the other two marines didn’t join the combat. My leader had decided to charge and bring death down to the foes of the Cult. The trooper in the uilding had decided to stay put while the trooper by the trees had decided to charge with the leader, making it a two on one fight. Although the marine had bested my trooper in combat, he was unable to wound him. On the other end of the spectrum, my leader had bested the marine in combat, giving him 4 strikes against the marine, doing nothing against his armour.

The Chaos leader had shot at the trooper that was out in the open, burning him to a light crisp. The bolter marine had moved up far enough now to shoot at the poor cultists in his sights, hitting one of my heavy stubbers and downing the poor guy. In the combat, the marine had once again fought against my trooper, this time downing the poor fellow with the sweep of his hand. It was my leaders turn, and had rolled poorly, rolling 3 ones to hit, and a three. I was afraid that this would be it for my poor cultist leader, but the dice are fickle and turned on my opponent also, allowing my cultist leader to live to fight another day. With my 3 guys down, I decided I had taken enough casualties and bottled out.

Results:
My Cultists would live to fight another day, although two of the four that had gone down or had damage had been captured, and on my next game I must play the rescue mission in order to get them back. I am determined to get my cultists back from the hands of the enemy, and hopefully I shall. From this mission I got another cultist, this time with a shotgun, ammo reload, and clip harness, although one of my troopers had died in the conflict. Such is life (and death) in the 41st millennium. One had survived unharmed (my grenade launcher) and the other two captured as I mentioned before.

After thoughts:
I think what I could have or rather should have done, was be more aggressive with my troopers and move them forward faster, I also think that I could have moved my heavy stubbers into a better position, perhaps up onto the platform where they could have shot from above and gotten a better angle. I also think that my grenade launcher should have gotten into cover better and faster before firing.

I also got some more work on my cultists done. I had gotten the green stuff onto the handles of the chainswords. Next I’d like to get them shaved down and filed down to make the handles details look a bit more crisp than what they are now. We’ll see what happens, I just hope I don’t mess it up.

And that's my first battle report. I hope you all enjoyed it, along with the progress on my conversions.
